During the 19th century, pianos continued to grow in power, yet also in responsiveness of action. The outstanding improvements were the double repetition action of Sebastien Erard of Paris which made possible extremely rapid repetition. The full cast iron frame of Alphaeus Babcock of Boston made the final engineering basis for the extended modern keyboard.
